Small parts such as screws, nuts, bolts, and rivets can be chromium plated in wire mesh baskets or by stringing them on wires. Stringing on wire or racking is convenient for particles of moderate size, perhaps 25 mm long or longer. For basket plating, horizontal copper wire mesh trays are generally used with a rim about 13 mm high, soldered to a frame for suspension from the cathode rod.
Plating preparation
If part are transferred from nickel or other baths to the chromium bath without undue delay, only an acid dip and water rinse may suffice. On the other hand if the nickel is buffed or the parts are handle or stored for a time, further treatment may be necessary before chromium plating.
The success of chromium plate in industrial applications may probably be attributed to its unique combination of properties not possessed by any other one material available commercially. The most important of these are hardness, adhesion, corrosion resistance, non galling and non wetting qualities, and low coefficient of friction. In many instances all these properties are important for successful commercial applications.
Chromium Etching and pitting of the brass metal is sometimes encountered in hard chromium plating even in ordinary baths with only sulfate catalyst, if stray current is permitted to leave non plating area such as the exterior of cast iron diesel cylinder liners being plated on the inside only. This can be prevented by greater care in maintaining full insulation on racks and fixtures, or by insulating the surface to be protected.
